Design Thinking

This page is a journey through optimism, empathy, risk-taking, failure, and iteration. It showcases my design-thinking skills while creating a fictional onboarding experience at a company called Technology Education.

Audience: New instructors creating their first course at Technology Education

Responsibilities: Instructional design, eLearning development, script writing, storyboarding, voice acting

Tools: Lucid Chart, Powtoon, Google Docs

Problem and Solution

A fictional tech education company is experiencing low instructor retention rates. A needs analysis revealed that new instructors lack the guidance and support they require during this complex process.

In response, onboarding materials are being created to mentally prepare new instructors and empower them to move confidently through the process.

First Iteration

After conceptualizing, storyboarding, scripting, and voice recording, I created this animated video using Powtoon. Although the video clearly conveys the process, it does not adequately address what the instructor will experience cognitively and emotionally as they navigate this complex undertaking. In response to this, I created a journey map which is featured below.

Journey Map

The following journey map was created to help develop an empathetic perspective toward the experiences of new instructors. It outlines not only the steps of the course creation process, but also the feelings and thoughts that may arise. This particular instructor is has been teaching advanced courses and bootcamps synchronously online for 5 years. This will be her first time developing material for an asynchronous course as well as working with an instructional designer and filming content.

After taking the above factors into consideration, I created a simple roadmap showing just the four stages of the process. New instructors will only be given this document to avoid cognitive overload and unnecessary stress. Once the instructors embark on a new stage, they will experience meaningful trainings created to ensure a smooth process and avoid possible friction points.
